The Lakeland Electric Internship program offers a unique opportunity for students to gain practical experience in the energy and utilities industry. As an intern with Lakeland Electric, you will be exposed to various departments and gain insights into the operations, maintenance, and management of one of Florida’s largest municipally owned utilities. This internship is designed for students who are pursuing a career in energy, engineering, business, or related fields, and want to develop real-world skills in a dynamic and innovative environment.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in various operational and administrative tasks across multiple departments, including engineering, operations, customer service, and energy management.
  • Support the team in data collection, analysis, and reporting related to utility operations, energy distribution, and power generation.
  • Assist in preparing reports and presentations on projects related to utility infrastructure, sustainability initiatives, and operational improvements.
  • Conduct research and assist in implementing solutions for system optimization, efficiency improvements, and regulatory compliance.
  • Shadow engineers and technicians during field visits to gain hands-on experience in utility maintenance and repair activities.
  • Participate in safety training sessions and help ensure compliance with safety protocols during tasks.
  • Collaborate with team members to support the ongoing projects, which may include renewable energy integration, smart grid technology, and system upgrades.
  • Provide assistance in customer service support and help resolve basic inquiries related to utility services.
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Management, Environmental Science, Business Administration, or related fields.
  • Expected graduation year of 2025 or later.
  • A strong academic record and demonstrated interest in the energy sector or utility management.
Experience
  • No prior work experience is required, but any relevant coursework, projects, or volunteer work related to energy, engineering, or utility systems is a plus.
  • Enthusiasm to learn, strong work ethic, and ability to work effectively in both team settings and independently.
Skills
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Knowledge of specialized software (e.g., AutoCAD, GIS, or data analysis tools) is an advantage.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and prioritize effectively.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong focus on accuracy.
  • A genuine interest in energy production, sustainability, and utility services.
