Description

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Internship Program is designed to provide students with real-world experience in nuclear security, engineering, scientific research, and policy development. The internship will allow students to work closely with professionals in various fields, including engineering, computer science, national security, and policy analysis, while also contributing to the NNSA’s mission of ensuring the safety, security, and effectiveness of the United States' nuclear deterrent. This program is an excellent opportunity to develop professional skills, gain hands-on experience, and contribute to the NNSA’s vital national security missions.

Responsibilities
  • Support NNSA Mission Projects: Work on various research and development projects related to nuclear security, nonproliferation, nuclear weapons safety, and policy.
  • Conduct Analysis: Assist with data analysis, technical assessments, and scientific modeling in areas related to nuclear security.
  • Collaborative Projects: Participate in team-based projects, collaborating with NNSA staff and other interns from various fields, contributing to problem-solving and innovation.
  • Reporting: Prepare reports and presentations to communicate findings, technical analysis, or project outcomes to leadership.
  • Professional Development: Attend training sessions, workshops, and seminars that will enhance your technical and professional knowledge in nuclear security and related fields.
  • Networking Opportunities: Engage in networking events with professionals from across the NNSA, Department of Energy (DOE), and other national security agencies.
Qualifications
  • Educational Background:
    • Currently enrolled in a full-time undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited institution, majoring in relevant fields such as Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, National Security, Policy, Mathematics, or related disciplines.
    • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Academic Standing:
    • A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (preferred).
    • Strong academic track record in relevant coursework and a demonstrated interest in national security, nuclear policy, or related technical fields.
Experience
  • Internship Experience (Preferred):
    • Previous internship or relevant academic projects in a technical, engineering, or policy-related field are desirable but not required.
  • Research Experience (Preferred):
    • Experience with research methodologies, technical writing, and data analysis is an advantage.
  • Security Clearance (Not Required but Beneficial):
    • Some internships may require a background check and security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required.
Skills
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
    • Familiarity with programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB) and data analysis tools is a plus.
  • Communication Skills:
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Ability to present technical concepts in an accessible manner to non-experts.
  • Problem-Solving:
    • Strong analytical skills and the ability to think critically and solve complex technical problems.
  • Teamwork & Collaboration:
    • Ability to work effectively in team environments and across multidisciplinary groups.
  • Attention to Detail:
    • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail in both technical work and documentation.
