The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Internship Program for Recent Graduates offers recent college graduates the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the transportation industry. The program is designed to provide a professional development pathway for individuals seeking to build a successful career in public service, particularly in transportation policy, infrastructure development, and highway management. Responsibilities
  • Assist in the design, implementation, and management of transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Conduct research and data analysis related to transportation policies and programs.
  • Participate in the preparation of reports, presentations, and other technical documents.
  • Collaborate with team members to develop strategies and solutions for ongoing transportation challenges.
  • Support the evaluation of transportation systems, projects, and technologies.
  • Attend team meetings, trainings, and workshops to further enhance knowledge and skills in the field.
  • Provide support to various FHWA departments as needed.
  • Complete assigned tasks and projects within set timelines, ensuring compliance with FHWA guidelines and regulations.
Qualifications
  • Recent graduate (within the last 2 years) with a degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Urban Planning, Public Policy, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Strong interest in transportation infrastructure, highway systems, and public policy.
Experience
  • No prior professional work experience required; however, relevant academic projects, internships, or volunteer work in transportation, urban planning, civil engineering, or similar fields will be considered an asset.
  • Experience with technical software or analytical tools related to transportation engineering or public policy is a plus.
Skills
  • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
