Description

The City of Irving Internship Program offers a unique opportunity for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in a variety of municipal functions. The Open Rules position provides an opportunity for interns to engage in tasks related to urban planning, local government policies, public services, and other areas that support city operations. Interns will work closely with department leaders and staff to enhance their professional development, contribute to meaningful projects, and gain insight into local government workings.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with research and analysis on urban policies, zoning regulations, and city ordinances.
  • Support departmental staff with the creation and implementation of public service programs.
  • Collaborate with various departments to ensure smooth operations and compliance with local rules and regulations.
  • Help with drafting reports, preparing presentations, and communicating findings to supervisors and community stakeholders.
  • Participate in meetings, offering insights and feedback on current and future city planning projects.
  • Provide administrative assistance as needed, including organizing files, maintaining records, and preparing materials for public hearings or city council meetings.
  • Contribute to public outreach efforts, including social media engagement and assisting with community education programs related to city governance and regulations.
  • Attend training sessions and workshops for professional development.
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in political science, urban planning, public administration, or a related field. Recent graduates may also apply.
  • Strong academic performance, particularly in courses related to government, law, or public policy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • A passion for public service and interest in local governance and policy-making.
Experience
  • Prior experience in an office environment, internships, or volunteer work is preferred but not required.
  • Any exposure to government operations, law, urban planning, or community outreach is a plus.
Skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Strong analytical, research, and writing skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to interact with a wide range of stakeholders.
