The Illinois State Police (ISP) Internship Research Program offers an immersive opportunity for students to engage in meaningful research and learn about law enforcement operations in Illinois. The program is designed to provide interns with hands-on experience, professional development, and insight into how research informs policing strategies, criminal justice policies, and public safety. Interns will collaborate with experienced professionals and contribute to projects that directly impact the effectiveness and efficiency of the ISP.
- Assist in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data related to law enforcement and public safety.
- Support research projects on crime trends, criminal behavior, policing strategies, and community engagement.
- Contribute to reports, presentations, and publications based on research findings.
- Collaborate with ISP staff and other departments on various law enforcement-related initiatives.
- Participate in meetings and discussions regarding policy development, strategy, and operational improvements.
- Conduct literature reviews and stay current on research developments in criminal justice and law enforcement.
- Attend training sessions, seminars, and other professional development opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned by program supervisors.
- Currently enrolled in a recognized undergraduate or graduate degree program in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Public Administration, Political Science, or related fields.
- Must be in good academic standing.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong interest in criminal justice, law enforcement, or public safety research.
- Previous coursework or academic experience in criminal justice, criminology, or law enforcement-related topics is preferred, but not mandatory.
- Any prior research experience (academic or professional) would be an advantage.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Knowledge of basic research methodologies and data analysis techniques.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.

- Practical experience in law enforcement research and public safety.
