The NWS Internship Program aims to provide students with practical experience in weather forecasting, data analysis, and public communication. Interns will work alongside experienced NWS professionals, gaining skills that are critical to a career in meteorology, environmental science, and public safety.
- Assist with daily weather observations and support forecasting activities.
- Analyze meteorological data and produce reports to aid in understanding and predicting weather patterns.
- Participate in creating weather-related content for public advisories, briefings, and other forms of communication.
- Conduct research on climate trends, severe weather events, or specialized forecasting topics.
- Assist in the preparation of weather alerts, bulletins, and public safety notifications.
- Attend team meetings, briefings, and training sessions to develop a deeper understanding of NWS operations.
- Provide administrative support, including data entry, document preparation, and maintaining organized records.
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 or equivalent academic standing.
- Completion of at least two years of college coursework prior to the start of the internship.
- Previous internship or volunteer experience in meteorology, climate science, environmental science, or a related field is an advantage but not required.
- Demonstrated interest in weather forecasting, environmental science, or public safety communication.
- Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to interpret and analyze meteorological data effectively.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with meteorological software or data analysis tools (preferred).
- Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team environment.
- Ability to maintain professionalism and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Hands-on experience with a federal agency dedicated to protecting public safety through accurate weather forecasting.
- Exposure to advanced meteorological tools, forecasting techniques, and data analysis methods.
