Description

The NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) Summer Internship Research Undergraduate Program offers undergraduate students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on research experience in a scientific and engineering environment. This program is designed to support students’ career development by providing mentorship from leading scientists and engineers, exposure to cutting-edge research, and training in various scientific methodologies and standards.

Responsibilities
  • Work on assigned research projects under the guidance of NIST scientists and engineers, contributing to advancements in measurement science, standards, or technology.
  • Participate in laboratory work, data collection, analysis, and interpretation, depending on the specific project area.
  • Collaborate with research teams to brainstorm and problem-solve, providing input and assistance where needed.
  • Attend seminars, workshops, and presentations to expand understanding of NIST’s research areas and industry applications.
  • Document experimental procedures, maintain lab notebooks, and prepare summary reports on findings.
  • Present research results at the end of the internship in a formal presentation to NIST colleagues.
Qualifications
  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate program in physics, engineering, computer science, chemistry, materials science, or a related STEM field.
  • Completion of at least two years of undergraduate study by the time of the internship start date.
  • Strong academic performance with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Experience
  • Previous lab experience, either through coursework or prior internships, is preferred but not required.
  • Exposure to research projects, independent studies, or relevant coursework in science or engineering is a plus.
Skills
  • Basic understanding of scientific principles and research methods relevant to your field of study.
  • Proficiency with common computer software such as Microsoft Office, and familiarity with data analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python) is beneficial.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical concepts.
  • Team-oriented mindset with a willingness to collaborate and learn in a multidisciplinary setting.
